The Neuropsychology of Socio-emotional Functioning:
Implications for Educational Therapy

Description of presentation:
In the past ten years there has been an explosion of research-based knowledge about the ways the brain mediates emotional regulation. This presentation will review the research and place it within the context of the complex interplay of the brain, personal experience, learning, and interactions with others. There will be a focus on the ways in which the relationship between the educational therapist and the client has the potential to facilitate the student’s emotional regulation and enhance availability for learning.

Biography:
Dr. Warren Rosen, Ph.D., is a neuropsychologist who specializes in understanding the interplay between neurocognitive, emotional and social features. In addition to his private practice, which centers on diagnostic care and psychotherapy, he is an assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center in the Departments of Pediatrics and Behavioral Sciences.

 

Tears, Fears and Quest for Fire: A Psychoeducational Journey
Dorothy Ungerleider, MA, BCET, FAET

Description of presentation:
Just what is a “psychoeducational intervention?”  This presentation discloses it’s meaning, range, and scope through techniques employed for one client with a severe central auditory processing disorder that impacted every aspect of her life. The therapeutic outcomes of these interventions employing an Organic Curriculum will be described in academic, social/emotional, and employment applications.

  1. Explain the meaning and describe the implementation of psychoeducational interventions
  2. Apply the principles of an “Organic Curriculum” to their own practices
  3. Analyze the effectiveness of unconventional approaches in response to the client’s life events, including reciprocal (client/ ET) learning opportunities.

Biography:
Dorothy Ungerleider is the Founding President of AET. She is the author of Reading, Writing and Rage, Psychoeducational Perspectives, and her newest book Educational Therapy in Action. In addition to her private educational therapy practice in Encino, California, she advises development of training programs at CSU Northridge.  She has worked with delinquent youth and trained juvenile court judges on assessment of adjudicated youth.

 

Parental Divorce: A Social-Emotional Labyrinth
and Its Implications for Learning

William D. Gieseke, Ph.D.

Description of presentation:
Parental divorce has lasting implications for the children. Research has shown that parental divorce creates its own metaphorical monstrous Minotaur and challenges the professionals helping the child find a way out of the ensuing labyrinth. This presentation will focus on the child’s developmental journey during and after the divorce process. Dr. Gieseke will explore implications for child development, the child’s sense of self, and for educational therapy or other clinical practice contexts.

Biography:
William D. Gieseke, Ph.D., is in private practice in Northfield, IL where he sees children, adolescents, and adults for psychotherapy. He is a graduate of the Institute for Clinical Social Work, Chicago. In addition, he is a graduate of and on the faculty of the Child and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy Training Program (CAPPT), at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis. He is often appointed by the family court to work with divorcing and post-divorce high-conflict families. Dr. Gieseke also has a long standing interest in working with children with learning disabilities.
