"Language, Learning & Social Skills: Impact of Social Skills on the Learning Process"

Presented by: Susan Diamond, MA, CCC-SLP

This presentation will provide information on social skills and learning.  Children who present with difficulties in focus, language processing, and learning tend to have issues with social skills. They want to interact, join in, play, converse, and have friends.  However, many times they are isolated and ostracized by their peers because they miss social cues.  Imagine the ramifications in a classroom setting when these students answer completely off the topic in oral and written language.  The peers laugh, and the teacher becomes angry because it is thought to be poor behavior. 

Strategies, accommodations, and games will be demonstrated to promote language processing; social skills, social thinking, and improved communication.  Implications for learning will be explored in the areas of written language, math, comprehension and critical thinking skills. Fortunately, with consistent cues, concrete rules, and repetition these students make gains in their social language and learning skills, thus improving their overall communication in school and at home.

Participants will be able to:

Sue Diamond is a licensed speech and language pathologist with a private practice in the San Francisco Bay Area. Sue has over twenty years experience in the field and specializes in diagnosis and treatment of children with speech, language, and social delays and disorders. She contracts her services to hospitals and schools, and conducts workshops for training therapists, teachers, and parents. Her qualifications include a Master’s Degree in Speech Pathology and a state license from the California Board of Medical Assurance. She is also certified through the American Speech and Hearing Association (Certificate of Clinical Competence) and has a Clinical Rehabilitation Services Credential.

Sue is the author of “Language Lessons In The Classroom” and co-author of “Webs For Language" (ECL Publications). Both books have been bestsellers for over 10 years. She has also produced and presented the professional DVD “Diamond Social Skills.” Sue talks candidly about social language issues for children and teens and provides strategies to help.
