Study Groups
AET’s Study Groups provide members with a forum for sharing techniques, philosophies, and problems related to work with learning-different individuals. Study Groups most directly express the needs of local members and are the primary vehicle through which the national association communicates with and remains responsive to its members. Additionally, some Study Groups provide workshops to the public thereby increasing awareness of current research and of services available to students with special needs.
Study group formats vary depending on the interests of the particular group. Some Study Groups promote interdisciplinary sharing and networking between AET and allied professionals by inviting psychologists, speech/language therapists, occupational therapists, medical doctors, lawyers, and others in related fields to speak. Other groups focus on presentations of case studies, demonstrations of members’ expertise in the use of assessment tools and techniques, review of specific instructional strategies, or sharing conference, journal, and research information. This sharing of members’ expertise and the ensuing discussions foster collegiality and provide support for practitioners.
Study group leaders convey questions, concerns, and suggestions to the Board of Directors via the Study Group Director. Conversely, decisions made by the Board and issues under consideration by the Board are relayed to the Study Groups for their consideration and commentary.
Study Groups are the foundation of AET, promoting our goals for increased professionalism, collegiality, and continuing education so members can provide the very best service to their clients, families, and communities.
