Contextual Impact of Family, School and Culture/Clinical Case Management Schedule
This course facilitates the process of establishing a professional private practice as an educational therapist who works with an individual client in a clinical setting from intake through termination. Topics include defining one’s practice, marketing, collaboration, office procedures, record keeping, fee structure, time management, and maintaining a balance between ones’ professional and personal life. The broader perspective of the role of the educational therapist as “Ombudsman” is defined as it pertains to assisting clients in determining needs and obtaining services within the psychosocial context of the client’s family, school, community and culture. Some of the concerns addressed are adapting interventions and goals to the values, beliefs, expectations, and practical constraints held by the client; assessing family, school, and community climates; and prioritizing the need for other services. Students will also explore the impact of the therapeutic process on the internal world of the educational therapist, the interpersonal dynamic between client and therapist, as well as the ethics of the profession.
