Continuing Education Requirements

To maintain Associate ET, ET/Professional (ET/P) or Board Certified (BCET) membership status, the AET bylaws require all members to complete a minimum of 40 hours of Continuing Education (CE) every two calendar years.

The intent of Continuing Education is to advance the knowledge and skills that an educational therapist can gain from a variety of outside sources. Because educational therapy is multifaceted, maintaining a high level of professional competence requires broad, current knowledge.

When and Where to Submit Hours

Every two years, notice of due dates for reporting of continuing education hours will accompany membership renewal notices. Members who log their CE Hours on the AET website need only make sure that all 40 hours are accounted for and indicate on the log that they attest to the fact that they took part in the listed activities.

Members who prefer not to use the website log may download the printable log and submit it to the AET office.

For Continuing Education Questions: CE@aetonline.org

All CE activities must be supported by acceptable documentation, but the documentation need not be submitted every two years. Instead, documentation should be retained by members to be submitted in the event they are selected for a random audit of CE requirement adherence. Acceptable documentation is described below each area of qualifying CE activities.

The hours given are suggestions and serve as a range, except where maximum numbers of hours are specified. Individual distributions will vary.

All items listed for CE credit must be relevant to the practice of educational therapy. In addition to the field of education, members are encouraged to draw upon the disciplines of psychology, neurology, neuro-psychology, brain research, learning theory, speech and language, child development, vocational training, family counseling, etc.

Restricted and non-eligible activities include the following:

  • Deriving all 40 hours of continuing education from a single area as outlined below. Units must represent diverse activities
  • Learning center or school staff meetings that do not address issues relevant to educational therapy.
  • Volunteer activities for AET or other professional organizations (other than presentations).
  • Coursework or trainings not related to the practice of educational therapy.

Meeting CE Requirements in Remote Geographic Locations

If you live far from a metropolitan area where conferences, coursework, and study groups are not a realistic option, email CE@aetonline.org for assistance in developing an alternative plan.
