AET Professional Workshop

Coaching ADHD:
Using the secrets of world class athletes to help your clients reach their potential

Presented by: Sarah Cheyette, MD

February 26, 2022

Do you want the power of the Olympic coaches to help bring forth your client’s best performance?  This workshop on ADHD will demystify this complex subject and give you actionable steps to help both you—and your clients—feel empowered.  ADHD comes up in the diagnosis and management of educational issues. While the term has been around for a long time, the understanding of it as well as societal views on it continue to evolve.  Learn about the evolving nature of ADHD — the biology behind it, its associated educational issues, and changing societal views. Dr. Cheyette will inspire you to take a fresh look at ADHD and how it affects your clients’ thinking, learning, and self-esteem.

Attendess will be able to:

  1. Explain what ADHD is and how it is similar to and different from a “learning disability.”
  2. Describe some of the neuroanatomy and neurochemistry of ADHD
  3. Define two principles of coaching
  4. Name and compare two different types of medications for ADHD

AET Professional Workshop

The Neuropsychology of Written Language Disorders:
An Introduction to the FAW

Presented by: Dr. Steven G. Feifer

January 28, 2022

Join us as we explore the neuropsychological underpinnings of the written language process.  For years, educators have struggled to cultivate more effective writing skills in their students, as well as remediate written language disorders.  The ability to generate and produce written language requires multiple linguistic skills involving both phonological and orthographical functioning (the elementary components of language), efficient word retrieval skills, executive functioning skills to arrange our thoughts and ideas, and working memory to hold our thoughts in mind long enough for effective motor skills output. A breakdown in these fundamental cognitive, linguistic, or motoric processes can result in various subtypes of written language disorders.

Attendess will be able to:

  1. Define the term dysgraphia and list key behavioral signs of written language dysfunction in both elementary and secondary aged children.
  2. Explain the neural architecture responsible for written language development in children and identify key brain regions responsible for the organization and production of writing skills.
  3. Describe three specific subtypes of writing disorders and target key interventions for each subtype.
  4. Use the Feifer Assessment of Writing (FAW) as a more effective diagnostic tool to screen, diagnose, and remediate written language disorders in children.

Reminders – Upcoming VSG schedule January 2022

The VSG meets weekly on Fridays. All AET members are welcome to come to any/all meetings they are available and want to join.  There is no commitment to attend all the meetings, because we know that scheduling can be difficult.

Below is the monthly schedule. The group meet sat the same times (listed below) on the 1st, 2nd, and 4th weeks of every month.  The time of the VSG on the 3rd Friday is the only one that varies month-to-month.

  • 1st Friday (January 7) at 8:00am (PT)/11:00am(ET) – open forum style (anything that anyone would like to discuss is welcome!)
  • 2nd Friday (January 14) at 11:00am (PT)/2:00pm (ET) – open forum style (anything that anyone would like to discuss is welcome!)
  • 3rd Friday (January 21) at 11:00am (PT)/2:00pm (ET) – special topic: Discover how you can contribute your ideas to The Educational Therapist Journal.  It is easier than you think! A conversation with Sherry Cramer, journal editor
  • There will be no VSG on January 27 because there is an AET-sponsored Workshop that day (The Neuropsychology of Written Language Disorders: An Introduction to the FAW, Presented by: Dr. Steven G. Feifer)
  • All of the VSGs for the month of January 2022 (and almost all in general) have the same login info.

Zoom login information is available on the AET website, in the members’ center, under “study group resources.”
