Workshop Description

During this workshop, Peter Wright will lead attendees through his highly recognized program – Wrightslaw Special Education Law and Advocacy Training – designed to meet the needs of parents, advocates, attorneys, educators, health care providers, and others who represent the interests of children with disabilities and their families.

The one-day program will focus on four areas:

• Special education law, rights and responsibilities

• Tests and measurements to measure progress & regression

• SMART IEPs

• Introduction to tactics & strategies for effective advocacy

Keynote

Special Education Law for Educational Therapists: Peter Wright will guide us to an understanding of the legal aspects of advocacy and the supports available to professionals, students, and their families. Discover invaluable resources that provide a clear roadmap to successful outcomes for students navigating the IEP process or seeking accommodations under a 504 plan. Pete will discuss the essential concepts, skills and tools that empower educational therapy professionals working with private or public school clients with special needs.

Breakout Sessions

All About Tests and Assessments: Peter Wright will demystify the assessment process and discuss techniques to make it less intimidating for families and students. Discover how to best support families in determining if a comprehensive assessment is necessary and how to guide them to an understanding of their child's learning, academic, social skills, or behavioral needs. Pete will explain the strengths, weaknesses and potential problems with specific tests and explore the process of developing a plan to address a student’s learning challenges in collaboration with the school and other allied professionals.

About the speaker

Peter Wright is a practicing attorney, a nationally recognized expert on Special Education Law, and founder of Wrightslaw. In 1993, Peter successfully represented Shannon Carter before the US Supreme Court in a unanimous decision in Florence County v. Shannon Carter. This case is widely recognized as one of the most important landmark cases in special education law history. Pete is the co-author of Wrightslaw: Special Education Law, 2nd Ed. (2006), Wrightslaw: No Child Left Behind (2003), Wrightslaw: IDEA 2004 (2005), Wrightslaw: From Emotions to Advocacy, 2nd Ed.
