DESCRIPTION:Join us for this pre-confrence workshop! \N*FREE with 2024 conference registration*\NEmpowering Education with Generative AI: A Practical Guide for Educators, Parents, and the Students They Support As we prepare learners for their future, one thing is certain: that future includes generative artificial intelligence (genAI).  Teachers, parents, and learning specialists need to understand how to harness the capabilities of this emergent technology while guiding students (and fellow professionals) to use it effectively and responsibly. Similar to previous transformative technologies in education — school-based Internet in the late 90s, classroom computers in the early 80s — genAI offers a wealth of possibilities to enhance teaching and learning, especially for students with disabilities.  However, this vast potential comes with challenges and limitations which, if not properly recognized and managed, can easily overshadow the benefits. In this three-hour webinar, assistive technology consultant and former engineer Shelley Haven will introduce a novel paradigm for how to think about genAI in education, and use a mix of foundational knowledge, practical skills, and live demos to help participants:\N\NUnderstand what generative AI is (and isn't) and how it works.\NDifferentiate between the ever-increasing plethora of genAI and AI-enhanced tools.\NIdentify practical applications of genAI to support diverse learners and enhance instruction.\NCraft effective genAI prompts (user requests) for specific goals.\NExplore ways to address challenges and ethical considerations related to using genAI in education.\N\N LEARNING OUTCOMES As a result of this activity, participants will be able to:\N\NExplain the fundamental concepts behind generative AI (e.g., where it gets its information and how to interact with it) and its potential impact on teaching and learning.\NDescribe at least four best practices that address genAI issues such as equity and access for all students, privacy, bias, and ethical use.\NName at least three factors that might impact one’s choice of genAI tools for different tasks.\NList the six elements of a well-formed (effective) prompt and at least two strategies to avoid common prompt-writing pitfalls.\NDescribe at least three categories of prompts that leverage genAI capabilities for teaching and learning.\N\N Presented by Shelley Haven  ATP, RET, BSME Shelley Haven is a RESNA-certified Assistive Technology Professional (ATP), Rehab Engineering Technologist (RET), and former engineer who specializes in matching students with appropriate technology. Her consulting practice, Technology to Unlock Potential, serves families, educators, and schools both online and in person with a focus on learning differences, ADHD, and executive functioning. During her 38 years in assistive technology, Shelley previously directed AT for Stanford University’s Office of Accessible Education and helped create the Schwab Learning Center at Stanford (now part of Children's Health Council) for students with learning differences and ADHD.  She also created and taught an online college course for UCSC Extension, “Assistive Technology for Learning Differences”. As an AET Allied Professional, Shelley writes the column "Assistive Technology in Practice" for AET's professional journal The Educational Therapist.  Her latest endeavor is training education professionals how to leverage generative AI for teaching and learning.

An ET’s scope of practice can become blurred when clients have complex needs and ecological contexts. Encountering ethical dilemmas requires making challenging decisions about what course of action to take. A panel of Board Certified Educational Therapists will present real-life scenarios and use an Ethical Decision-Making Model (EDM) of their choice to explain the thought process they used to arrive at an ethical solution to each dilemma.\NPart 2\NAfter the break, panelists will focus on answering this question: How have you addressed the technology challenges in your practice in the 21st century? Use of apps, AI, safeguarding records, privacy, etc., will be discussed within the context of each panelist’s practice.\NLearning Outcomes:\N\NState the ethical issue(s) in at least one of the ET practice dilemmas presented.\NConnect the ethical issue(s) to the AET Code of Ethics.\NExplain the use of an EDM and thinking process used to evaluate and determine a course of action.\NList at least three approaches to the types of technology challenges faced in a current ET practice.\N\NDisclosure:\NPresenter disclosures are available through a link located on the CE Credits page.

They’re not simply kids who take longer to process information, are anxious, depressed, apathetic, or have learning challenges, and “not caring” isn’t something that can be fixed with the right curriculum or by trying harder. Through recent research and clinical examples, Dr. Ellen Braaten will explore the issue of kids who are unmotivated from different vantage points, starting with identifying the problem -- why is it that so many kids don’t seem to care about anything these days? Dr. Braaten will discuss the factors that apply to children’s motivation – their abilities, the things that give them pleasure, and the things they spend time doing -- using the Motivational APP, which stands for aptitude, pleasure, and practice. Aptitude, pleasure, and practice will be explored in the larger context of societal expectations as well as connecting these constructs to a child’s individual personality and neurocognitive profiles. Participants will learn how expectations can get in the way of motivation and how to set goals that are appropriate for kids who might have difficulty making and accomplishing meaningful goals. \NDr. Braaten is the author of: Bright Kids Who Can’t Keep Up. New Book, Bright Kids Who Couldn’t Care Less.

DESCRIPTION:Virtual—please email Li at usmoons@mindspring.com for the zoom invite\N \NIdentity-Affirming EF Strategies for Neurodivergent LGBT+ Clients\NSpeaker: Kim Tran M.S, ET/P\NFor LGBTQIA+ neurodivergent clients, access to executive function support is deeply shaped by systemic and social factors, making it an important equity issue. This presentation examines how intersectionality shapes executive functioning, how systemic oppression creates barriers to support, and the unique EF experiences of neurodivergent LGBTQIA+ clients. Through a decolonial lens, we’ll explore insights and strategies for providing affirming, identity-centered support that empowers clients to live in their authenticity.\N \NKim Tran brings over a decade of clinical experience in educational therapy, executive function coaching, and educational consulting, combined with formal education and training in business management, educational technology, educational therapy, executive functioning, language organization, and study skills strategies. She draws deeply from lived experience, offering insights from sitting at the intersection of multiple identities, including being a first-generation college graduate, the child of immigrants, an Asian American, and a member of the queer community. Her work is rooted in authenticity-centered, culturally competent practices designed to foster meaningful and sustainable learning support
